How we work
We use the industry standard Davinci Resolve grading system with Advanced panels. For calibrated 4K HDR and SDR monitoring, we use the Eizo Prominence and the Sony BVM-HX310.
The Resolve platform offers our colourist a suite of tools. Colour correction, conforming, audio and VFX in one ecosystem affords the colourist efficiency during a project.
Our colourists were early adopters of the Dolby Vision workflow. We were the first company in the UK to use Dolby Vision Technology to restore Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter in 4k. Whether working alone, remotely or during in-person sessions with directors of photography, directors or clients, our colourists are skilled at producing the highest standard of film grading, working with some of the biggest names in the film and music industries.
Our usual workflow is to grade the restored pictures matching an approved reference from a previous approved release or print. If these aren’t available other sources are sought to provide information for the look of the film. We use any available references including audio recording, interviews and books to guide us. If possible, we will then invite talent from the original production or an expert of the film (approved by the client) into the suite to contribute to the final pass.
To fully exploit the film on various platforms, our suggested workflow is to grade in a HDR colour space and create any deliverable from this master timeline. There are many variations around this workflow depending on client needs but this provides the core starting point.
Silver Salt have two experienced award-winning graders: Ray King and Steve Bearman who have both graded classic and cult movies for archives, distribution labels and studios alike. Titles include Deer Hunter, Cross of Iron, Wickerman, Lavender Hill Mob, Long Good Friday, Don’t Look Now, Time Bandits, Warriors, Narc, Beatles No.1 Project and Shae Stadium.
